System for Ebay to verify that a product is genuine goods

I think that Ebay should require sellers to fill out a certificate of authenticity form when they post a product over a certain amount of money. This would force sellers to at the very least, make a statement indicating whether or not they know a product is genuine or not AND supply a certificate of authenticity if one exists.

This is a good idea for both the buyers out there, and for e-bay itself, who is coming under more pressure and being held responsible for the selling of fakes. They were just fined $millions in France for this. An idea like this could help them show "significant effort" to controlling the problem, and more importantly would protect us little guys from getting taken.

That doesn't really solve anything, because they can still lie just as they can lie now. And a certificate of authenticity is not a legally binding document, or I mean to say it is no more legally binding then making a false statement on Ebay. In addition you still have the option of disputing the item with PayPal, Ebay, and if worse came to worse your credit card company.

I think the deterrence effect could be pretty significant. As an additional layer of 'validation', there is more obvious intent to commit fraud if this is faked, and therefore presumably a higher level of culpability. Kind of like adding perjury to a lie. If such things were ever prosecuted it could add some weight to a case....
